Statistical Data

Worldwide, an estimated 33.2 million people are living with HIV and 2.1 million people have died through AIDS.

Belize’s first case of HIV was in 1986. In 2005, there were approximately 6,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and 14,000 children who have been vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in Belize. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people in Belize between the ages of 14 and 44 are HIV positive.

Within Belize communities, HIV/AIDS poses a major challenge.  As a developing country of 314,300 (as of 2008), Belize lacks resources to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. The estimated HIV rate of infection at the end of 2007 was 2.1% . Belize is ranked 1st in Central America and 2nd in the Caribbean for rate of infection per capita.

According to the Statistical Institute of Belize, 2007 Mid-year statistics the Cayo District represents 23.6% (73,400 persons) of the Belize population and includes San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Benque Viejo, Belmopan, and Cayo Rural. The Belize population in 2007 was 311,500.
