The Cayo AIDS Committee was founded in 1999 with 20 members. Today, the organization is growing. It is comprised of members of all local key stakeholder groups including representatives of local government departments, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs), local businesses, other agencies, other local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), representatives of FBOs and CBOs.

Executive Board

Chairperson: Mr. Omar Rodriguez

Omar Rodriguez is the Chairperson for the Cayo AIDS Committee. Since March 2008, he has attended numerous workshops and training sessions both locally and internationally.

Omar works as a San Ignacio police officer. During his free time, Omar works within the community as a leader and volunteer. Omar Rodriguez is a 2006 Fellow for the Gojoven program and has worked alongside international facilitators. In the joint venture between The Cornerstone Foundation and UNICEF, Omar has worked as Project Coordinator for the special project, Caring for Children. He is also a member of the Belizean Emergency Contraceptive Advocate (BECA) team.

As a father and husband, Omar has demonstrated strong leadership skills and is a dedicated Christian. He volunteers his time as Second Councilor in the Branch Presidency of this church. Omar enjoys playing with his three children, cooking, and simply having fun.

Vice Chairperson: Ms. Carol Tynison

Treasurer: Ms. Melissa Paredez

Melissa Paredez has recently assumed the role of Treasurer. In 2005, she graduated from Sacred Heart College with an Associate Degree in International Business. While attending the junior college she entered the Business Scholarship club and planned many fund raising activities to help students attend a tertiary institution. Currently, Melissa works at Sacred Heart College as an assistant secretary.

Assistant Treasurer: Ms. Vanessa Paredez

Vanessa Paredez serves as the Assistant Treasurer for CAC. Outside of the organization, she is employed as the Office Manager at The Cornerstone Foundation. She is the current Youth Ambassador Leader for the youth group that also promotes HIV and AIDS Awareness. Vanessa has held the role of youth coordinator, participated in Peace March, and AIDS Walk and attended workshops about Gender Based Violence and Domestic Violence. In her free time, Vanessa likes to listen to music, read and play football with her brothers.

Secretary: Mr. Dave Florez

Outreach Coordinator: Carmita Lemus

As a member and Outreach Coordinator for CAC, Carmita's responsibility is to coordinate and manage events and plan fundraisers. Ms. Lemus has held the position of outreach coordinator since she joined its membership in June 2006. With the organization, she focuses on outreach: creating awareness and educating Belizeans about HIV and AIDS.

Carmita Lemus is a Native Belizean. She resides in San Ignacio, Cayo. Presently, Ms. Lemus is working at Cornerstone Foundation as Program Manager. Her interests primarily are helping and working for positive changes, making a difference in people's lives. In her free time, Carmita enjoys listening to music, reading and socializing.

Outreach Coordinator Advisors: Melissa Jenkins, Morriesia Gentle, Kimberly Aldana


Currently, there are approximately 15 active CAC members. Training is offered to CAC members for more knowledge about HIV/AIDS.
